12 Pillars of Character Education Virtues

The Integrated Character Education Program offers several alternative development to establish and nurture individual to be personally virtuous character. Choice of priorities was based on the primacy of the three dimensions of character education is the basis for the development of complete and comprehensive character education, namely individual dimension, social dimension, and moral dimensions. 12 Pillars of Character Education Virtue proposed by Doni Koesoema A are as follows:

1. Appreciation of the body

Appreciation of the body is a fundamental virtue that needs to be developed in everyone. Appreciation of the body including the willingness and ability of individuals to maintain and care for each individual’s physical health. Physical health is one important part for the formation of virtue. Character education should be prioritized on how individuals can keep his body from each other, not hurt them, but makes the body grow healthy existence in accordance with the development and growth in nature. Respect for the body of an individual self-expression to become nurses and protectors to each other. Individuals must cultivate in himself a desire to treat the body of self and others, including psychological and emotional growth.

2. Transcendental

Development of transcendental virtues, be it a religious nature, religious, and the sublime, such as sensitivity art, appreciation of human works that evoke reflection and the ability to understand the greatness of the Divine is the basis for the development of character  formation. Each individual was awarded the sense of something soft, smooth, the work is spiritually accompany humans, sense of something supernatural. Sensitivity to the Holy One, the transcendent, the good, the beautiful, whether in man or in nature, is one means to establish a private individual to be virtuous.

3. Academic excellence

Academic excellence is a fundamental goal of education institutions. Academic excellence is different from just passing the exam. Academic excellence included in it, love for knowledge, critical thinking skills, fast to the conviction, and willing to change his mind after a careful consideration and argument, has the openness to other people’s thinking, daring to continuously evaluate and critique themselves, skillfully communicate ideas , thought, through the language applicable to the scope of the academic world, develop a sense of embitterment intellectual who became a key and opening the door for the presence of science. From a love of science is to grow the innovation, creation and renewal in the field of science.

4. Self-control

Self-mastery is the ability of individuals to control emotions and feelings, and want to subjugate all emotion driven at the correct destination in harmony with the guidance of reason. Temperance includes the willingness to process emotions and feelings, a sense of feeling like putting inclination in accordance with the appropriate context and purpose of reason as to guide him. Temperance includes the individual’s ability to put yourself in, act and speak wisely in space and time specified.

5. Courage

Courage is a virtue that allows the individual to do something and realize what it wanted. Courage includes the willingness to sacrifice for the values that the principle of his life, resilient, persistent, hard work, because the individual has lofty ideals to be achieved in his life. Courage is the impetus that allows individuals make real and realize their dreams.

6. Love of truth

The love of truth is the basis for the formation of good character, not just as a learner, but also as human beings. Human longing for the truth and the man her mind trying to find, discover and implement what is believed to be the truth. The principle of sticking to the truth must be applied for individual practice and in life together. The love of truth that allows someone’s true courage to sacrifice himself for the sake of the truth of his beliefs. Therefore, determination of the truth values  that determine human identity as a person of character.

7. Skilled

Having a wide range of competencies and skills required, for the development of the individual and within the framework of professional development a requirement for the development of character education is intact. Have the basic ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, competent in the field that was involved is the basis for successful living in society. Through its competence is an individual capable of changing the world.

8. Democratic

Global community to live in unity with others. There is a need to need each other, shoulder to shoulder with each other. Society cannot live in a closed because of connectedness with one another it is a factual human condition. Therefore, each individual must learn how to live together, set the order of life together, so that inspiration and individual aspirations can be achieved. Democracy presupposes that individuals have the autonomy to manage their lives together so that individuals can grow healthy together. Democracy includes the development and growth of national spirit.

9. Appreciate the difference

The difference is human nature. Appreciate the fundamental difference is the attitude that must be grown within the individual. Especially in the life of nation and state in Indonesia, have grown to appreciate the differences within each individual, because our country was founded because the founders of this nation appreciate the difference, and the difference was they wanted to unite the power and energy in building the nation.

10. Responsibility

Responsibility is an essential element for the development of character education because it is associated with expression of human freedom for himself and others. This responsibility has three dimensions, namely the responsibility to (a relation between the individual with others), responsibility for (the individual’s relation with itself), and the responsibility of (individual relationships related to the duties and responsibilities in society).

11. Justice

To be fair, and willing to fight for justice is the basic attitude of a person of character. Important to fight for justice because human beings have a tendency to antisocial. For that shared commitment required for each individual are appreciated. In the context of life together, a spirit of justice for a society of healthy, humane and dignified. Without justice, many of the rights of others are violated.

12. Moral integrity

Moral integrity is the main target of the formation of the individual in character education. Moral integrity is what makes each individual in a pluralistic society can work together to fight for and realize what is good, noble, just and human dignity, regardless of differences in belief that they have. Moral integrity of the main rewards of life, human dignity as creatures of value and worth whatever the circumstances and conditions. The presence of individuals who have the moral integrity to be the basis for the construction of a civilized society. Moral integrity arise if the individual is able to make decisions through a process of rational considerations are correct, and implement them in the act wisely, according to the context of space and time. Moral integrity including an individual’s ability to make practical policy that is meaningful to her own life and others.
